He played for the USSF, prior to the 1990 FIFA World Cup, before been loaned to the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks. Wynalda was later on loaned to the German Bundesliga side Saarbrucken and went on to score 8 goals in his first season. He was ultimately named the best new comer for that season , becoming the first American to win a top flight European soccer award.
